I don’t usually buy juice, because I prefer to eat the whole fruit… except for when I was pregnant! I craved fruit and juice like crazy! Water made me nauseated, but juice was perfect.
I still didn’t like the idea of downing that much sugar, though. I wish I had thought up a recipe like this grapefruit juice back then! I guess now I’ll be set if I have another pregnancy. Or, my hormones will decide I need to to crave something else!
The pasteurized egg whites in this recipe add 14 grams of protein, without altering the flavour. The blended egg whites also add a frothiness. Did you know that egg whites are also what gives an Orange Julius its frothiness?
For safety’s sake, remember to only use pasteurized egg whites. Raw egg whites pose the risk of Salmonella or Campylobacter poisoning.
This recipe calls for a whole grapefruit to be blended with the egg whites, but you could also simply stir some egg whites into a poured glass of purchased grapefruit juice.
To avoid excess bitterness, make sure to remove as much pith as possible before blending. If you still find the juice bitter after having blended it, add in a banana. But if you’re okay with bitterness, keep the pith on! It will add more fibre!

Hi Jessica,
I’m interested in making this, but I’m rather lazy. I don’t feel like juicing grapefruits and feel tempted to just buy grapefruit juice. About how much grapefruit juice would you add to the 1/2 cup of pasteurized egg whites?
I will only stop asking questions when you stop with the delicious recipes.
Also, I want to tell you that your idea of intuitive eating sounds great. Except it would never work for me. I would intuitively always eat chocolate chips straight from the bag. The rest of my family makes good choices and listens intelligently and intuitively to their bodies and make excellent decisions. I will aim to follow their examples and cook healthy recipes like the ones you post!

Don’t worry about asking questions! That means that I’m posting recipes that people are actually interested in. I’m also prone to not being exact in my recipes so the questions help me to be more accountable in that regard.
This is only a guess but I’d start by adding 2 cups of juice to the egg whites (and it could really be any type of juice you prefer, doesn’t have to be grapefruit). From there, you can add more juice if you find it’s not sweet enough 🙂
I also think you’d be a great intuitive eater! A lot of people initially go through a period of binge-ing…. but then it wears off (that’s a really abbreviated version of what goes on!).
